Imagination Applied helps leaders and teams turn uncertainty into direction. Founded by keynote speaker, advisor, and theater director Josh Penzell, the company brings Artistic Intelligence into organizations through live experiences, executive advisory, and rehearsal-based transformation. Its practice, TheaterThink, helps people interpret what matters, compose the right ensemble, and learn by putting possibilities into motion—especially as AI changes how work gets made.
Why theater
The premise is not that business should be more creative. It is that organizations already face the exact conditions a director works in every day: the material is incomplete, several interpretations are possible, judgment matters more than compliance, and the right answer changes as the work moves.
Theater has spent a few thousand years developing a craft for exactly that. Most management practice has not. So we borrow the craft rather than the vocabulary—and when the theater language stops doing real work, we drop it.
Josh Penzell, founder
Josh Penzell helps leaders create direction when the answer is not waiting to be found. He is a keynote speaker, advisor, founder of Imagination Applied, and forthcoming author of Artistic Intelligence.
Trained as a theater director and formerly VP of AI Innovation & Strategy at ELB Learning, Josh brings the rehearsal room into the future of work—helping organizations align people, direct AI, and turn uncertainty into intelligent action. He has worked across learning and enablement in organizations including Amazon Alexa and Skillsoft, holds an MFA in Theater Directing from Brooklyn College and a BS from Northwestern University, and writes for TD Magazine.
His keynotes are live, participatory, and built around a simple idea: AI does not replace leadership. It changes what leadership has to rehearse for.

What we publish
We publish research under the Open Research Series, with the analysis code and file checksums released alongside each paper. The standard we hold ourselves to is simple: every claim traceable to code, and limitations stated in the body rather than a footnote.
